French prosecutors investigate death threats against Sarkozy in Paris prison

French prosecutors have launched an investigation after a video emerged showing a prisoner at La Santé prison in Paris threatening the life of former President Nicolas Sarkozy. The incident comes just one day after Sarkozy began serving a five-year sentence for illegal campaign financing.

The video, reportedly filmed inside the prison, surfaced on social media and contained threats directed at the former president. Authorities were alerted immediately by the prison director, prompting an investigation. Police have since questioned three inmates and seized two mobile phones during a search of the facility. How the devices were smuggled into the prison remains under investigation.

Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, was convicted of accepting millions of euros from the regime of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to fund his 2007 presidential campaign. While Sarkozy denies all charges, he became the first modern French president to serve prison time. He has also faced convictions in other corruption-related cases, though appeals are ongoing in some instances.

To ensure Sarkozy’s safety, authorities have stationed two armed officers to guard him during his time at La Santé. This decision has sparked backlash from prison guard unions, who argue it disrupts the prison's regular security operations and constitutes preferential treatment for the ex-president.

La Santé prison, one of France’s oldest and most prominent facilities, has housed numerous high-profile inmates over the years. Sarkozy’s imprisonment has added a new layer of scrutiny to its operations.

The investigation into the threats is ongoing, with prosecutors yet to confirm whether charges will be filed against any individuals involved in making the video.
