French national detained in Togo since June released, says foreign ministry

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that a French national who had been detained in Togo since June 2025 has been released and has returned to France.

According to the ministry, the release followed a decision by the Togolese judicial authorities. French officials did not comment on the substance of the case, describing it as an individual judicial matter.

The man, a 44-year-old French citizen, had been arrested in Lomé during a period of political unrest marked by demonstrations. He was facing serious charges related to state security, which could have led to a lengthy prison sentence.

French diplomatic services stated that they had remained in contact with the individual and his family throughout the detention period. The authorities welcomed his return to France and reiterated their commitment to providing consular assistance to French citizens detained abroad.
