French economists unveil 14 policy proposals ahead of 2027 presidential election
With less than a year to go before France’s 2027 presidential election, the Cercle des Économistes has presented a package of 14 policy recommendations, urging political leaders to place long-term economic reform at the centre of the campaign.
The proposals were released during the closing of the annual economic forum in Aix-en-Provence, where policymakers, business leaders and academics gathered to debate France’s future economic priorities.
Reform agenda focused on long-term growth
The recommendations cover a broad range of structural reforms aimed at strengthening economic competitiveness, boosting innovation and improving social mobility.
Among the flagship proposals is the creation of an investment endowment for young people, intended to help future generations build financial assets and improve access to education, entrepreneurship or professional development.
The group also advocates stronger support for the emergence of European industrial and technology champions capable of competing globally.
Mobilising savings for innovation
A central recommendation calls for better channelling European household savings into high-growth sectors, particularly technology and innovation.
The economists argue that Europe possesses substantial private capital but lacks efficient mechanisms to direct those resources toward businesses capable of driving long-term economic expansion.
Increasing investment in innovative industries is presented as a key factor in strengthening Europe's competitiveness.
Institutional reforms also proposed
The report recommends modernising several public institutions, including reforms to the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, with the objective of improving public consultation and policy evaluation.
The proposals are designed to encourage governments to adopt a longer-term approach to economic decision-making rather than focusing primarily on short-term electoral cycles.
Economic debate enters presidential campaign
The recommendations were unveiled during the Rencontres Économiques d'Aix-en-Provence, which brought together around 10,000 participants and featured senior political figures, economists and several declared candidates for the 2027 presidential race.
Organisers hope the proposals will help shape public debate in the months leading up to the election by encouraging candidates to present comprehensive economic reform agendas.
