French court to decide on Nicolas Sarkozy’s release

The Paris Court of Appeal is set to rule on Monday regarding the release request of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has been held at the Santé prison since October 21.

Sarkozy, sentenced on September 25 to five years in prison for his alleged involvement in the Libyan financing of his 2007 campaign, attended the hearing via videoconference. The public prosecutor has expressed support for his release under strict judicial supervision. The final decision is expected at 1:30 p.m., according to the appeals chamber.

The former president’s lawyers filed the request on the very day of his incarceration. The court had a two-month period to examine the appeal but is set to deliver its decision in less than three weeks. If granted, Sarkozy could regain his freedom under judicial monitoring within the day.

This unprecedented detention in the history of the Fifth Republic has sparked significant political and media attention. Critics have described the situation as “judicial persecution,” while Sarkozy maintains his innocence and has appealed his conviction. Under the procedure, his imprisonment is considered pre-trial detention, intended to secure evidence, prevent flight, or avoid witness tampering.
