France to try 14 people over deadly 2021 channel migrant shipwreck
Fourteen people will stand trial in France over their alleged involvement in the deadly 2021 Channel migrant shipwreck that killed 31 people, according to information confirmed by the National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office.
The defendants are suspected of being linked to human smuggling networks operating between northern France and the United Kingdom. They face charges including involuntary manslaughter, involuntary injury, and participation in organized illegal migration networks.
The case concerns the November 2021 disaster, considered the deadliest migrant crossing incident in the English Channel to date. The victims were among dozens attempting to reach Britain in an inflatable boat launched from the French coast.
Investigators believe the group of accused played various roles within trafficking operations, including organizing departures and facilitating irregular crossings.
The trial will take place in a criminal court, marking a key judicial step in one of the most serious migration-related tragedies recorded in the Channel in recent years.
