France detects 40 new synthetic drugs between 2024 and 2025

French authorities have identified 40 new synthetic drugs between 2024 and 2025, including 26 discovered during 2025 alone, highlighting the rapid evolution of the illicit drug market and the growing challenges faced by public health and law enforcement agencies.

The findings come from France’s national drug monitoring system, which tracks the composition and circulation of illicit substances across the country. Specialists report that the increase has been largely driven by the growing diversity of semi-synthetic cannabinoids, a category of substances that continues to expand as manufacturers seek alternatives to regulated compounds.

The number of samples collected and analyzed rose significantly during the period, reflecting both the diversification of products available on the market and the need for closer surveillance of emerging substances. Authorities use these analyses to identify unusual or harmful effects associated with drug consumption and to detect changes in product composition.

Researchers have also observed a transformation in cannabis-related products. Edible cannabis products are becoming increasingly common, while synthetic cannabinoids have been detected in various vaping liquids and in some products marketed as cannabidiol (CBD). Health authorities warn that consumers may be exposed to substances different from those they believe they are purchasing.

The report notes a considerable number of health alerts linked to cannabis-related products, including unexpected reactions and adverse effects, some of which were classified as serious. These findings reinforce concerns about the growing complexity of the market and the risks associated with unregulated products.

In addition, analysts found that cocaine samples continue to show very high purity levels. This trend suggests a strong availability of highly concentrated products with fewer adulterants, potentially increasing health risks for users.

Regarding heroin, experts reported no major disruption in supply during the 2024–2025 period. However, laboratory analyses revealed significant variations in purity levels, particularly in brown heroin samples, indicating an increasingly heterogeneous market.

The report also highlights the dynamic nature of the synthetic cathinone market, including substances such as 3-MMC. Specialists note that regulatory changes and international supply networks continue to influence the emergence of new compounds and substitution trends.

Public health experts emphasize that the rapid appearance of new psychoactive substances requires continuous monitoring, scientific research, and prevention efforts to better understand their effects and protect consumers from potentially serious health consequences.
