France calls for Nato exercise in Greenland and signals readiness to take part
France has called for the organization of a Nato military exercise in Greenland and said it is ready to contribute, according to a statement from the French presidency. The announcement comes amid renewed remarks by former US president Donald Trump expressing interest in taking control of the autonomous Danish territory.
The Élysée said France had formally requested the exercise within the Nato framework, underlining the importance of collective security and coordination in the Arctic region. Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, holds strategic significance due to its location and growing geopolitical interest linked to climate change and security concerns.
The statement follows the recent deployment of troops from several European countries, including France, to Greenland as part of a Nato-led reconnaissance mission conducted last week. French officials stressed that the initiative aims to reinforce alliance solidarity and readiness.
Nato has increased its focus on the Arctic in recent years, as competition among global powers intensifies in the region. France’s proposal is seen as part of broader European efforts to reaffirm commitment to collective defense and to support Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland.
