Former Zambian president Edgar Lungu dies at 68
Edgar Lungu, the former president of Zambia, has passed away at the age of 68. His daughter, Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, confirmed his death in a video shared on the official Facebook page of the Patriotic Front, the political party he once led. She stated that Lungu died in a South African hospital after being under medical care in recent weeks. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Lungu rose to power in 2015 after the death of President Michael Sata, completing the remainder of his term. He secured a full presidential term in the 2016 elections, defeating current president Hakainde Hichilema, but was later defeated by Hichilema in the 2021 election.
Despite plans to run for office again in 2026, a court ruling in 2023 barred Lungu from contesting, stating that his time in office from 2015 to 2016 constituted a full term. With his subsequent term, he had already served the constitutional limit of two terms. Lungu claimed the decision was politically motivated. Additionally, his family has faced accusations of corruption.
In 2023, Lungu alleged that authorities were restricting his political activity by keeping him under close surveillance. Police, however, stated that monitoring former presidents is standard procedure to ensure their safety.
