Former Spanish Prime Minister Zapatero investigated in influence peddling case
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is under investigation by Spain’s High Court over allegations related to influence peddling and other possible offenses, according to judicial authorities.
The court announced that investigators carried out searches at Zapatero’s office in Madrid as well as at three additional locations linked to the case. Authorities also confirmed that the former prime minister has been summoned to testify before the court on June 2.
The investigation forms part of a broader judicial inquiry into suspected improper political influence and potential irregular activities involving public and private interests. Officials have not yet released detailed information regarding the exact accusations or the scope of the alleged actions.
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero served as Spain’s prime minister from 2004 to 2011 and remains a well-known figure in Spanish and European politics. During his time in office, he was associated with major social reforms and economic policies, but his political career has also faced criticism during periods of economic difficulty.
The case has attracted significant attention in Spain, where corruption investigations involving political figures often generate strong public and media interest. Legal analysts stress that the opening of an investigation does not imply guilt and that judicial proceedings are still at an early stage.
The development comes at a time when transparency, ethics, and public accountability remain central issues in Spanish political debate.
