Five German climbers, Including 17-year-old, Killed in avalanche in Northern Italy

Five German mountaineers, including a 17-year-old girl, have died and two others were injured after being caught in an avalanche near the Cima Vertana peak in northern Italy’s Trentino-Alto Adige region, Italian alpine rescue teams reported on Sunday.

The avalanche occurred Saturday afternoon at about 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) as two groups of German climbers were ascending the Ortles massif, close to the Swiss border.

“The first group of three was completely buried under the snow,” rescuers said, confirming all three had died. In the second group of four climbers, two managed to reach safety but sustained injuries and were airlifted to nearby hospitals, said Alberto Covi, head of the South Tyrol Alpine Rescue Service.

By Sunday morning, rescuers found the bodies of the last two missing climbers, identified as a father and his 17-year-old daughter. Operations were hampered by poor weather and snow conditions, officials said.

Authorities have issued warnings of new snowfall expected above 2,400 meters, which could worsen avalanche risks in the coming days. The fresh snow is expected to settle on harder ice crystals formed by recent temperature drops, creating unstable layers that heighten the danger of future slides.
