Fire at Rohingya camp in Bangladesh damages dozens of shelters

A fire broke out late Sunday night at a Rohingya refugee camp in southeastern Bangladesh, damaging dozens of shelters, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

In a statement published on Monday, the UN migration agency said its teams were deployed immediately after the fire erupted, working alongside Rohingya refugee volunteers and the Bangladesh Fire Service to contain the blaze.

The IOM praised the rapid response of emergency teams, noting that their swift intervention prevented the fire from spreading further within the densely populated camp.

Local media reports indicated that between 20 and 25 shelters were destroyed in the incident. No casualties were reported.

Bangladesh currently hosts more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in the Cox’s Bazar region. Most fled Myanmar in August 2017 following a military crackdown that human rights organizations have described as genocide.

Fires are a recurring threat in the overcrowded camps, where shelters are often built with highly flammable materials and access for emergency services remains limited.
