Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy series, has publicly reacted to an AI-generated concept video reimagining Final Fantasy VI as a modern 3D remake, describing it as “incredible” and sparking renewed debate around artificial intelligence in game development.
The two-minute fan video, posted on X on May 16, reinterprets the 1994 Super Nintendo role-playing game using a visual style similar to the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. Set to the iconic “Terra’s Theme,” the concept uses AI-generated imagery to depict how a full modern remake of Final Fantasy VI could look. The clip quickly gained traction online, accumulating more than 600,000 views and spreading widely across gaming communities.
Sakaguchi, who directed the original Final Fantasy VI and founded the franchise, reshared the video on social media with a brief reaction expressing surprise and admiration. His comment was widely interpreted as an endorsement of the creative potential behind AI-assisted visualization tools, even if unofficial and fan-driven.
The response triggered a lighthearted exchange within the industry. Veteran game designer Akitoshi Kawazu responded humorously, suggesting Sakaguchi should “stop at the first line,” a remark seen as friendly teasing between long-time colleagues. The exchange nevertheless highlighted ongoing tensions in the gaming sector regarding the use of generative AI in creative production.
The discussion also revived long-standing questions about a possible official remake of Final Fantasy VI.
