Fight against illiteracy in Morocco: 2.4 million beneficiaries in three years
Morocco has made significant progress in its national strategy to combat illiteracy, with approximately 2.4 million people benefiting from literacy programs over the past three years, according to official data presented in Rabat.
During the 2024–2025 season alone, more than 653,000 individuals took part in these programs. Authorities report that women represent the vast majority of participants, accounting for around 84%, while rural populations make up nearly 59%. Young people also constitute a significant share, representing about a quarter of beneficiaries.
Officials emphasized that these results come at a time of rapid economic, social, and digital transformation, which is reshaping public policy priorities. The focus is gradually shifting from simply implementing programs to achieving measurable impact, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
Government representatives highlighted that literacy efforts are not only educational initiatives but also key investments in human development, economic competitiveness, and civic participation. They reaffirmed the state's commitment to continuing and strengthening these programs in order to reduce illiteracy rates further.
Recent national census data indicates that the illiteracy rate has fallen to 24.8%, reflecting ongoing efforts across the country. However, challenges remain, particularly in rural areas and among vulnerable groups, requiring more targeted and inclusive interventions.
The meeting also reviewed the agency’s annual performance report, progress on strategic projects, and future plans for 2026–2028, including modernization of teaching methods and expanded post-literacy support to improve socio-economic integration.
