FBI Director Kash Patel files defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic
FBI Director Kash Patel has filed a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic, following a recent investigative report by the American magazine that raised concerns about his conduct and leadership.
The lawsuit, filed on Monday, seeks $250 million in damages from the publication and journalist Sarah Fitzpatrick. Patel claims that the article constitutes what he describes as a “defamatory, malicious, and biased attack” aimed at damaging his reputation and forcing him out of office.
The contested report alleges issues related to alcohol consumption and unexplained absences, suggesting possible instability within his role at the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Patel strongly rejects these claims, arguing that they are false and fabricated, and accuses the journalist of relying on anonymous sources without credible evidence.
While acknowledging that the press has the right to scrutinize the FBI, the lawsuit argues that the article crossed a legal line by publishing what it calls intentionally false allegations designed to harm Patel’s image.
The Atlantic, a well-known progressive-leaning magazine, has defended its reporting, stating that it stands by its findings and will vigorously defend itself and its journalists against what it calls an unfounded lawsuit.
Appointed during the Trump administration, Kash Patel has previously faced criticism over alleged political purges within the FBI, particularly targeting officials involved in high-profile investigations linked to former President Donald Trump.
