European ministers set for nuclear talks with Iran in Geneva on Friday
European foreign ministers from Germany, France, and Britain are set to meet with Iran’s foreign minister on Friday in Geneva to discuss Tehran’s nuclear program, according to a German diplomatic source.
Before the main meeting, the European officials will first confer with Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat, at Germany’s permanent mission in Geneva. This diplomatic initiative comes at a time of heightened instability in the Middle East, following a wave of military actions. Last week, Israel launched significant strikes against Iran, which responded by firing missiles at Israeli targets.
The talks aim to secure firm assurances from Iran that its nuclear activities are strictly for civilian use. The discussions are reportedly being coordinated with the United States, although President Donald Trump has not indicated whether the U.S. will join the military operations initiated by its ally, Israel. This ambiguity has fueled concerns that the conflict could further escalate.
The source noted that the high-level meeting will pave the way for expert-level technical talks to continue the dialogue. While Israel insists on dismantling Iran’s potential to develop a nuclear weapon, Tehran maintains that its nuclear ambitions are peaceful.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently expressed support for Israel’s military response and criticized Iran, urging it to de-escalate or risk more severe consequences. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also appealed directly to Iranian leadership, emphasizing that a diplomatic solution is still possible and stating, "It's never too late to come to the negotiating table."
