European fintech startup Zazu secures $1 million to expand in Morocco and South Africa
European fintech startup Zazu has raised $1 million in pre-seed funding to accelerate its expansion into Morocco and South Africa, with plans for a broader Africa-wide rollout starting in 2026. The company, founded in 2024 by former Solarisbank executives Rinse Jacobs and Germain Bahri, offers an all-in-one banking platform tailored to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Integrating services like business accounts, cards, invoicing, accounting, transfers, and treasury management, Zazu’s platform seeks to address the financial needs of what it calls the “missing middle.” These are SMEs that struggle to access financial services designed for their scale and complexity. Currently, more than 50 SMEs use Zazu’s beta version, while over 1,000 businesses await full access.
The funding round drew participation from prominent investors, including Plug and Play Ventures, Launch Africa Ventures, AUTO24.africa, Paymentology, Chari, and Fiat Republic. Founding members from European unicorns Qonto and Solarisbank also contributed.
Morocco and South Africa were chosen as initial markets due to their thriving entrepreneurial ecosystems and established fintech infrastructures. South Africa serves as a gateway to Southern African markets, while Morocco provides access to North and West Africa. The company plans to enhance its product offerings, expand its team, and prepare for additional market entries in 2026, with a seed funding round scheduled for early that year.
Zazu integrates seamlessly with business tools such as accounting software, payroll systems, and tax management platforms. Future upgrades will include e-commerce tools, HR software, and customer relationship management systems.
The move highlights Morocco’s growing role as a strategic fintech hub. The country’s progressive regulatory frameworks, advanced digital payment infrastructure, and capital market liberalization efforts are attracting international fintech investments. Other fintech players like British neobank Revolut and cross-border payments platform Grey have also recently targeted Morocco, underscoring its position as a burgeoning center for financial innovation in the MENA region.
Zazu aims to deliver financial solutions to over 50 million entrepreneurs, SMEs, and independent workers across Africa, driving digital banking transformation and fostering economic growth across the continent.
