European Commission awards €180 million cloud contract to four European providers
The European Commission has awarded a €180 million ($212 million) contract for sovereign cloud services to four European technology providers, reinforcing the European Union’s efforts to strengthen digital sovereignty and reduce reliance on non-European cloud infrastructure.
The six-year contract was granted to Luxembourg’s Post Telecom, Germany’s StackIT, French company Iliad’s data centre division Scaleway, and Belgium’s Proximus. The initiative is part of a broader EU strategy to develop secure, locally controlled cloud computing capacity across member states.
As part of the agreement, Post Telecom will collaborate with OVHcloud and CleverCloud, while Proximus will lead a consortium including Mistral AI, Clarence, Thales, and S3NS, a joint venture involving Google Cloud and Thales.
EU officials say the project is designed to enhance data security, improve technological independence, and support the development of a competitive European cloud ecosystem in a market currently dominated by US-based tech giants.
