Europe pushes for greater leadership in Ukraine peace effort

European leaders are intensifying their diplomatic efforts to play a more decisive role in shaping the peace process for Ukraine. The Coalition of the Willing, formed earlier this year, has pledged to send forces to Ukraine once hostilities end, with the goal of establishing a peacekeeping presence to stabilize the region. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that 26 nations have agreed to contribute troops to a “reassurance force” designed to safeguard Ukraine’s borders, airspace, and coastal areas.

During a recent meeting in London, heads of state directed their national security advisers to continue refining the framework for peace and underlined that any settlement must guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term stability. The discussions also stressed the importance of credible security commitments from both Europe and the United States to ensure the durability of any potential ceasefire.

Following the London talks, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened a follow-up call with allied leaders to provide updates and coordinate positions. European officials have expressed growing frustration at their limited involvement in U.S.-Russian consultations, arguing that Europe must not be sidelined in negotiations that directly affect its own security and regional order.

The coalition’s last session, held on November 25, included U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who briefed participants on ongoing discussions in Geneva. The next meeting, set for later this week, is expected to solidify Europe’s strategy to assert a stronger, more unified stance in the push for a stable peace in Ukraine.
