The satellite telecommunications giant Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, is in advanced discussions with Moroccan authorities to deploy its network in the Moroccan Sahara.

This initiative aligns with the broader modernization of the Kingdom's digital infrastructure and has the potential to transform connectivity in the southern provinces, positioning them as a technological hub for Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to Africa Intelligence, initial contact between Musk and Moroccan officials occurred in the summer of 2024, followed by in-depth discussions during the Qatar-Africa Business Forum held in Marrakech in November of the same year. Lauren Dreyer, Starlink's vice president, played a key role in these exchanges, which were later communicated by the company's Middle East and North Africa division.

The primary goal of this collaboration is to bridge the digital divide by providing high-speed satellite internet access, a development that would benefit local residents as well as public and private institutions in the region. In addition to improving telecommunications services, this technology could have strategic applications in security, education, and economic development.

Before operations can commence, Starlink must secure several approvals, including the endorsement from the National Agency for Telecommunications Regulation (ANRT), which oversees the technical aspects of the project, and the agreement from the General Directorate of Information Systems Security (DGSSI), which will assess the security implications of this satellite infrastructure.

Moreover, the arrival of Starlink raises concerns among national telecom operators, who fear increased competition from a provider offering direct and potentially more affordable internet access.

Elon Musk, a significant business figure and owner of Tesla, SpaceX, and the social network X, plays a central role in this expansion. Recently appointed head of the Government Efficiency Department by U.S. President Donald Trump, Musk continues to extend his influence in the technology and communication infrastructure sectors.

On March 4, 2025, Trump publicly praised Musk's commitment, stating: "Thank you, Elon. He is working very hard. He didn’t need to do this," as he applauded the billionaire at an official event.

If the project succeeds, Starlink could not only transform internet access in the southern provinces but also position Morocco as a regional leader in satellite telecommunications. This strategic development would mark a turning point in the country's digital integration and enhance its attractiveness for technological investments in Africa.
