Eid al Adha 2025: Celebrating the feast of sacrifice in Morocco
Moroccans are set to celebrate Eid Al Adha 2025 on Saturday, June 7, according to Ibrahim Akhyam, a researcher in timekeeping and a member of the Islamic Moon Sighting Project. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has directed its delegates to observe the crescent moon for Dhu al-Hijjah on Tuesday.
Eid Al Adha, known as the Feast of Sacrifice, occurs on the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah and commemorates the profound willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to God. Traditionally, Muslims observe this sacred occasion by slaughtering a sheep.
This year, however, Morocco has canceled the Eid Al Adha sacrifice rite due to severe drought conditions and a significant decrease in the herd population. Despite this setback, the country will maintain other customary rites, including morning prayers, family gatherings, and exchanges.
The discourse surrounding the exact date of Eid Al Adha remains nuanced. While some researchers suggest Friday, June 6, as a potential date, Akhyam leans toward Saturday, June 7. He emphasizes that sighting the crescent moon on Tuesday evening may prove challenging due to the crescent's insufficient age and the lack of scientific criteria necessary for confirmation.
Ultimately, while astronomical calculations provide guidance, the official date will be confirmed by authorized religious authorities in Morocco.
