Ecuador: Five killed in shooting linked to drug trafficking

Five people were killed and one injured in Ecuador following a shooting inside a billiard hall in Santo Domingo, about 60 kilometers west of the capital, Quito. Police attributed the attack to “a conflict between criminal groups,” according to local media reports on Saturday.

Ecuador has been plagued by growing violence among drug trafficking gangs, and deadly shootings have become increasingly common in recent months, particularly in the city of Santo Domingo.

On August 17, 2025, seven people were killed by masked gunmen in the same city, in what authorities also described as a gang-related attack.

According to the Ecuadorian Observatory on Organized Crime, homicides during the first half of 2025 rose by 47% compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting the country’s escalating security crisis.
