Ebola Outbreak in Congo remains in expansion phase, WHO warns

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains in an active expansion phase, with health authorities warning that transmission has not yet stabilized and continues to be driven by population movements.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that the situation remains concerning, with officials unable to confirm that the outbreak has reached a turning point.

“It is still in the expansion phase unfortunately. We would like to say it is stabilising but frankly we cannot say it yet,” said Dr Anne Ancia, the WHO representative in the country, speaking by video link from Bunia, the current epicentre of the epidemic.

According to Congolese health authorities, the outbreak has resulted in 1,561 confirmed cases, including 506 deaths, making it the largest recorded outbreak involving the Bundibugyo species of Ebola virus.

The Bundibugyo strain is a rare form of Ebola for which there is currently no proven treatment or cure, increasing concerns over the need for rapid detection, containment measures and medical support.

Health officials have identified population displacement and movement as key factors contributing to the continued spread of the virus. The challenge is particularly significant in areas affected by insecurity, where communities may face difficulties accessing healthcare services and preventive measures.

The outbreak has placed additional pressure on local health systems as authorities work to trace contacts, isolate cases and provide care to affected communities.

The WHO continues to support national health authorities in monitoring the epidemic and strengthening response efforts, while emphasizing the importance of early reporting, community cooperation and sustained public health measures.

The situation remains closely monitored by international health organizations as Congo faces another major Ebola challenge after previous outbreaks that have repeatedly tested the country's disease response capabilities.
