Dust storm disrupts Phoenix flights and leaves thousands without power

A massive dust storm swept through metro Phoenix on Monday, triggering severe thunderstorms that caused widespread power outages and flight disruptions at the city’s main airport.

Severe weather strikes Phoenix

The National Weather Service reported that the storm hit in the late afternoon, bringing strong winds, low visibility, and dense dust clouds that engulfed much of the region. Thousands of residents experienced power outages as the turbulent weather damaged transmission lines and electrical equipment.

Flight delays at Sky Harbor International Airport

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport faced significant disruptions as the Federal Aviation Administration issued a temporary ground stop around 5:30 p.m. due to intensifying thunderstorms. Although the order was lifted after 30 minutes, the airport continued to experience delays.

By 8 p.m., airport officials confirmed that over 100 flights were delayed, three were canceled, and one was diverted. Travelers endured long lines and uncertainty, with average delays lasting about 15 minutes as operations gradually resumed.

Citywide impacts and emergency response

Across Phoenix, fallen trees, dust-filled roads, and downed power lines created hazards, prompting emergency services to remain on high alert. Crews worked overnight to restore power to the hardest-hit areas, but officials warned residents to prepare for potential rolling outages.

The towering dust wall, a hallmark of Arizona’s summer monsoons, painted a dramatic scene across the city. Meteorologists cautioned that with high temperatures and monsoon conditions persisting, additional storms could develop in the coming days.
