Draft peace agreement shared with Kinshasa and M23, says Qatari official

A draft peace agreement has been shared with both the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government and the armed group M23 ahead of a new round of negotiations, a Qatari official confirmed on Sunday.

The official, who is closely involved in the mediation efforts, stated that Doha is preparing to host an “important cycle of talks” in the coming days. These negotiations aim to build on the declaration of principles signed in the Qatari capital on July 19, which called for the signing of a peace deal no later than August 18.

The announcement underscores Qatar’s growing role as a mediator in African conflicts, particularly in the Great Lakes region where the resurgence of M23 has destabilized parts of eastern Congo. While expectations remain cautious, the proposed agreement marks a significant step toward ending hostilities that have displaced thousands of civilians.

Observers note that the coming days will be critical in determining whether both Kinshasa and M23 are ready to make concessions necessary for lasting peace.
