Donald Trump confirms he will host Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday
Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this Friday at the White House, marking the Ukrainian leader’s third visit since Trump’s return to the presidency.
Speaking aboard Air Force One on his way back from the Middle East, Trump replied “I believe so, yes” when asked by a journalist if he would receive Zelensky this week. The U.S. president had just completed visits to Israel and Egyptfocused on discussions about the future of Gaza.
Earlier in the day, Zelensky had announced during a press conference in Kyiv that he would travel to Washington “this week” to meet the American president. “The main topic will be air defense,” he said, adding that he would also meet with U.S. lawmakers and representatives of the defense and energy sectors.
Recent Russian bombardments on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have left thousands of people without power as winter approaches. A Ukrainian delegation, including Prime Minister Ioulia Svyrydenko, Presidential Chief of Staff Andriï Yermak, and National Security Secretary Roustem Oumerov, is already en route to the United States.
Zelensky thanked Trump for “our dialogue and his support” on X, adding that the two leaders had spoken twice over the weekend.
During his press conference with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, Zelensky said the calls had focused on Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities.
Trump, meanwhile, stated Sunday that he would threaten Vladimir Putin with supplying Tomahawk long-range missiles to Ukraine if Russia refuses to end its invasion, launched in 2022.
The upcoming meeting follows their August 18 encounter at the White House, which came after Trump’s talks with Putin in Alaska — a notably more cordial exchange than their tense February meeting, when Trump and Vice President JD Vance had publicly humiliated the Ukrainian leader.
