Donald Trump calls for full demilitarization of Hamas while promising $5 billion for Gaza
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday demanded the “complete and immediate” demilitarization of Hamas as part of the second phase of his plan to end the war in Gaza. Speaking on his Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized that Hamas must honor its commitment to disarmament.
He added that members of his “Board of Peace” would announce a $5 billion allocation for Gaza’s reconstruction during a meeting on February 19 in Washington. The second phase of Trump’s plan envisions a gradual Israeli withdrawal, the disarmament of Hamas, and the deployment of an international stabilization force.
Israel continues to control more than half of the territory, while Hamas, in power since 2007, has refused to lay down its arms under Israeli conditions. Both sides accuse each other of violating the ceasefire that went into effect on October 10, after two years of war.
Trump described the Board of Peace, launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, as having “unlimited potential” for resolving armed conflicts globally. At least 19 countries have signed the founding charter, while other nations, including France, declined to join. The $5 billion pledged will fund thousands of personnel for the International Stabilization Force and local police to ensure the safety and peace of Gaza’s residents.
