Devastating Downpours Wreak Havoc in Southern Morocco

Intense rainfall and thunderstorms have wreaked havoc across several provinces in southern Morocco, resulting in significant destruction. According to official data, 18 fatalities have been reported across the affected regions.

The hardest-hit areas include the provinces of Tata (10 deaths), Errachidia (3 deaths, including 2 foreigners from Canada and Peru), Tiznit (2 deaths), Tinghir (2 deaths, including 1 Spanish national), and Taroudant (1 death). Additionally, four people remain missing in Tata province, with search efforts ongoing to locate them.

In terms of material losses, the affected regions have reported the following:

- Collapse of 56 homes, with 27 sustaining complete destruction.
- Full or partial collapse of 8 medium-sized infrastructure facilities.
- Damage to electricity, drinking water, and telecommunications networks, though repair work has restored a significant portion of the power grid and reconnected water and communication services.
-Temporary closures of 110 road sections, with 84 now reopened to traffic.

Public authorities have mobilized a comprehensive response, deploying human resources and logistical means to swiftly and effectively address the situation. Measures are being taken to support affected citizens, including the distribution of food rations, tents, and blankets to displaced families, and the rapid restoration of essential services in the impacted areas.

This event highlights the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness and resilience-building in the face of increasingly extreme weather patterns. As recovery efforts continue, the focus is on ensuring that affected communities receive the necessary support to rebuild and recover.
