DeSantis doubles down on Trumpism to reshape Florida's political landscape

Ron DeSantis finds himself in the looming shadow of Donald Trump. In a bid to carve out his own identity, the Florida governor has adopted a strategy of imitation, aiming to make the Sunshine State a bastion of MAGA ideals. Since the Republican administration's arrival in January 2025, Tallahassee has witnessed a flurry of initiatives designed to solidify DeSantis's legacy and align closely with Trumpist rhetoric as the 2026 elections approach.

Among his bold proposals is the potential candidacy of his wife, Casey DeSantis, to succeed him while he seeks to engrave his mark on Florida's governance. He has established a state Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), modeled after Elon Musk's version, even though a similar task force has operated since 2007. The state legislature has also introduced legislation aimed at undocumented immigrants, echoing the narrative that has defined Trump's policies. Additionally, Republican legislators are advocating for the elimination of the state property tax, a significant revenue source in a state that lacks an income tax.

However, the newly proposed DOGE has sparked criticism from both sides of the political aisle, with many viewing it as a mere publicity stunt. Critics argue that the push to abolish property taxes is unrealistic, warning that such a move could jeopardize essential public services funded by state revenue.

In response to growing concerns about his initiatives, DeSantis has remained largely silent. This has fueled accusations that he is merely seeking dramatic headlines rather than addressing Floridians' pressing issues. Jared Nordlund, state director of UnidosUS, expressed frustration at the lack of updates on the DOGE initiative, questioning its authenticity and calling for accountability.

Despite having a substantial budget surplus, DeSantis plans to cut 740 permanent jobs and terminate 900 contractor positions, citing a need to streamline government operations. He has promised that the new DOGE will eliminate redundant boards and conduct audits to uncover wasteful spending. However, critics, including members of his own party, have labeled this initiative as unnecessary, given the existence of an already functioning efficiency body.

DeSantis's proposal to eliminate property taxes has faced harsh scrutiny, with experts asserting that such a measure would devastate funding for critical services like law enforcement and emergency response. Local officials have voiced their concerns over the potential impact on public safety, emphasizing the reliance on property taxes.

Furthermore, DeSantis's immigration policies have embraced a distinctly Trumpian approach. Shortly after Trump took office, DeSantis convened an extraordinary legislative session to enact laws that align closely with the former president's immigration agenda. These new laws significantly increase penalties for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants and allocate substantial resources to bolster state enforcement of federal immigration policies.

As DeSantis gears up for the 2026 elections, he appears determined to reinforce his connection to Trumpism, perhaps as a strategy to position himself for a potential presidential run in 2028. His recent actions suggest a commitment to doubling down on the ideologies that have resonated with the Republican base, even as he navigates the complexities of distinguishing himself within the party.

With a political landscape that continues to evolve, DeSantis's trajectory remains uncertain. The delicate balance between aligning with Trump's legacy and offering a fresh perspective could prove pivotal in shaping his future political ambitions.
