Denmark and Greenland welcome proposed US security agreement

Denmark and Greenland have welcomed a forthcoming security agreement with the United States aimed at strengthening cooperation in the Arctic and North Atlantic, with the three governments expected to sign the pact next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the prospective agreement as a positive development for Greenland, Denmark and the United States. She said the arrangement would reinforce shared security in the Arctic and North Atlantic and benefit NATO and Europe, while recognizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also welcomed the agreement, saying it would strengthen security for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the wider Western alliance. He stressed that Greenland's interests and its role in international cooperation were reflected in the planned arrangement.

The announcement comes after months of heightened attention surrounding Greenland's strategic importance. The autonomous Danish territory occupies a central position in the Arctic and has long been significant to the security interests of the United States and its NATO allies. Washington already maintains a military presence on the island, including at Pituffik Space Base.

US President Donald Trump said the agreement would give Washington permanent responsibility for Greenland's security and prevent US adversaries from establishing military bases or military facilities on the island without American approval. He also said the United States would begin preparations for a larger military presence in Greenland. These statements go beyond the more cautious language used by the Danish and Greenlandic governments, which have emphasized sovereignty and self-determination.

The agreement is expected to be signed during the UN General Assembly next week. However, it will not automatically enter into force after signature, as the Danish government has said that the necessary parliamentary procedures must still be completed.

The planned pact reflects the growing strategic importance of the Arctic, where changing geopolitical dynamics, military activity and competition over infrastructure and resources have increased attention on regional security. For Denmark and Greenland, the agreement also places renewed emphasis on balancing closer security cooperation with the protection of Greenland's political status and right to determine its future.
