Deadly shooting in Crete linked to suspected vendetta leaves two dead
Two people were killed and several others injured on Saturday during a shooting in the central region of the Greek island of Crete, in what authorities believe may be connected to a long-standing vendetta.
According to the Greek news agency ANA, the shooting took place in the village of Vorizia, about 52 kilometers southwest of Heraklion, the island’s capital. Among the victims was a 50-year-old woman. Around ten others were wounded when gunmen opened fire on residential homes.
The attack occurred only a few hours after an explosive device targeted a house under construction in the same area, raising suspicions of a revenge-related conflict between local families.
Armed police swiftly secured the perimeter while ambulances evacuated the injured, national broadcaster ERT reported. Authorities are continuing to investigate the motive and are questioning witnesses from the community.
Illegal firearm possession is widespread in Crete, and vendetta-style disputes have historically been part of local feuds, often passed down through generations. Just last week, a 23-year-old man shot and killed a 52-year-old during a village celebration in western Crete, further highlighting the persistence of such violent rivalries on the island.
