Damascus accuses Kurds of deadly bombing in northern Syria
Syrian authorities on Sunday denied responsibility for a deadly bombing that struck a village in northern Syria the previous day, instead accusing the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of carrying out the attack.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Saturday that seven civilians were killed when government forces allegedly bombed the village of Oum Tina, near Deir Hafer in Aleppo province.
In response, the SDF blamed “pro-Turkish factions linked to Damascus” for the strike. But the Syrian Defense Ministry rejected these claims, stating through the official SANA news agency: “We categorically deny any involvement. The ones who bombed the village are the SDF, who systematically target civilians in eastern Aleppo province.” The ministry further claimed that rockets were launched from an SDF position toward Oum Tina.
The incident comes against a backdrop of fragile relations between Damascus and the Kurdish administration. After Islamist forces toppled President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, the new Syrian authorities reached an agreement in March 2025 with the SDF to integrate Kurdish institutions into the state framework. However, disputes over autonomy have delayed the implementation. Kurds demand recognition of their self-governing system, while Damascus firmly rejects decentralization.
The Deir Hafer region, a front line between the Syrian army and Kurdish forces, has frequently seen clashes. According to SOHR, fighting involving drones and heavy weaponry broke out again after Syrian airstrikes targeted SDF military positions in the area.
