Crypto fear index plunges to extreme lows amid market selloff
The Crypto Fear and Greed Index has dropped to 8, marking one of its lowest levels since 2022 and signaling extreme investor anxiety across digital asset markets.
The index, compiled by Alternative.me, measures sentiment on a scale from 0 to 100 using factors such as volatility, trading volume, social media activity, surveys, Bitcoin dominance and search trends. A reading below 25 indicates extreme fear. The current single-digit level places market sentiment near conditions last seen during the COVID-19 crash in 2020 and the collapse of major crypto platforms in 2022.
The index first entered extreme fear territory on January 30 and remained there for 46 consecutive days before briefly recovering to 28 on March 17. That rebound was short-lived. Sentiment quickly deteriorated again, falling to 10 on March 21 and reaching 8 the following day as selling pressure intensified.
The sharp decline reflects a combination of macroeconomic and market-specific pressures. Since Bitcoin reached a record high above $126,000 in October 2025, the market has faced sustained headwinds. Trade policy measures announced by US President Donald Trump, including a 15 percent global tariff increase, triggered renewed risk aversion. Stronger-than-expected US economic data has also reduced expectations for interest rate cuts, limiting appetite for speculative assets.
Geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East and around the Strait of Hormuz, have further driven investors toward safer assets. As a result, Bitcoin is now trading roughly 45 percent below its peak. Capital outflows from Bitcoin exchange-traded funds have added to downward pressure, with billions withdrawn over recent weeks.
Market activity indicators also reflect weakening confidence. Mentions of alternative cryptocurrencies on social platforms have dropped to their lowest level in two years, signaling reduced retail participation.
While extreme fear readings have historically coincided with market bottoms, analysts caution that they can also align with extended periods of selling. Some view the current sentiment as a potential signal of capitulation, a phase that can precede recovery if prices begin to stabilize while sentiment remains depressed.
For now, the data points to a market under significant stress, with investors closely watching for signs of stabilization or further declines.
