Colombians vote in congressional elections and presidential primaries
Millions of voters headed to polling stations across Colombia on Sunday to participate in congressional elections and party primaries that will help determine the candidates for the upcoming presidential race. The vote is considered a key moment that could influence the country’s political direction in the coming years.
Citizens are choosing representatives for both chambers of Congress, including 102 seats in the Senate and 182 seats in the House of Representatives. More than 3,000 candidates from numerous political groups are competing for these positions, highlighting the diversity and complexity of the nation’s political landscape.
At the same time, several political coalitions are organizing primary consultations to select their presidential candidates for the election scheduled later this year. These internal votes will shape the lineup of contenders seeking to lead the country in the next presidential term.
Gustavo Petro, the current president of Colombia, was among those casting ballots in Bogota, emphasizing the importance of democratic participation. Political analysts note that the composition of the new Congress will play a crucial role in determining how effectively the next president can pass legislation and implement policy initiatives.
With dozens of parties involved in the electoral process, experts predict a fragmented legislature that may require coalition-building to form a governing majority. Such alliances are often necessary in Colombia’s political system to advance reforms and maintain political stability.
Observers say the election reflects the country’s vibrant democratic process, with millions of citizens exercising their right to vote and participate in shaping the future of their government.
