China expands coast guard patrols east of Taiwan amid rising regional tensions
China has continued and intensified its coast guard operations in waters east of Taiwan, reinforcing a maritime presence that has drawn growing concern from Taipei and several European governments over its potential impact on regional stability and international navigation.
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, a new task force led by the coast guard vessel Xiushan assumed patrol duties on Saturday, replacing a formation that had been operating in the area since June.
Chinese authorities said the patrols would continue on a sustained basis and could be further expanded. Officials described the mission as an effort to safeguard fishing activities and maintain order along busy shipping routes.
Taiwan closely monitors Chinese operations
Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration confirmed that it had tracked the latest deployment and reported that Chinese vessels had established radio contact with commercial ships transiting the area.
While Beijing presents the operations as routine maritime law enforcement, analysts believe the patrols may serve a broader strategic objective by reinforcing China's administrative presence in waters surrounding Taiwan and strengthening its claims through continuous enforcement activities.
The waters east of Taiwan are considered strategically important because they provide access to key Pacific shipping lanes beyond the Taiwan Strait.
European governments voice concern
The expanding patrols have also prompted diplomatic reactions from Europe.
At the end of June, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement expressing concern over China's activities, warning that the operations could undermine regional security and threaten freedom of navigation and the safety of international maritime traffic.
The three governments urged respect for international law and emphasized the importance of preserving stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
A persistent source of cross-strait tensions
China considers Taiwan part of its territory despite the island's self-governing democratic administration.
In recent years, Beijing has steadily increased military and maritime pressure through large-scale military exercises, air and naval deployments, and expanded coast guard operations around the island. Chinese leaders have repeatedly stated that reunification remains a national objective and have not ruled out the use of force to achieve it.
The continuation of coast guard patrols east of Taiwan reflects China's broader strategy of increasing its operational presence around the island, adding another layer to already heightened cross-strait tensions and raising concerns among regional and international stakeholders about the future security of the Indo-Pacific.
