Chile: President-elect José Antonio Kast appoints two former Pinochet lawyers to cabinet
Chile’s president-elect José Antonio Kast has announced the appointment of two former lawyers of the late dictator Augusto Pinochet to key positions in his incoming government. Fernando Barros, 68, will serve as Minister of Defense, while Fernando Rabat, 53, will head the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.
Kast unveiled his cabinet on Tuesday in Santiago, describing it as “a government for urgent times… a strong team for challenging periods.” Both appointees previously represented Pinochet, who ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990 and passed away in 2006. Kast has publicly expressed admiration for the former dictator.
The Pinochet regime is historically linked to over 3,000 deaths and disappearances, yet some Chileans view it as a period of order and security. Kast was elected in December with 58% of the vote, defeating left-wing candidate Jeannette Jara, largely fueled by public concerns over crime and immigration.
