Gabrielle Chanel established her couture house in Biarritz in 1915, shaping a new vision of fashion grounded in ease and movement. The coastal city offered a setting free from rigid social codes that dominated European courts and Parisian salons. This environment allowed her to redefine elegance through function, comfort, and simplicity, elements that would become central to the identity of the House.

Before arriving in Biarritz, Chanel had built early success in Paris as a milliner and expanded with boutiques in Deauville in 1912 and Monte Carlo in 1914. In Biarritz, she consolidated her ambitions. At the Villa de Larralde, located near the casino and the seafront, she installed ateliers, boutiques, and living quarters. The layout anticipated the future flagship at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris, reflecting a unified vision of design, retail, and lifestyle.

Chanel’s work in Biarritz marked a decisive break from convention. She introduced garments made from jersey, a fabric previously reserved for underwear, alongside linen and cotton. These materials enabled fluid silhouettes and unrestricted movement. Capes and dresses were designed to be worn across settings, from day to evening, indoors and outdoors. The approach gained immediate traction and set new standards for modern dressing.

The aesthetic principles defined during this period continue to influence the brand. Clean lines, structured cuts, and a restrained visual language aligned with the emergence of Art Deco. Chanel’s designs mirrored the architectural transformation of Biarritz, where geometric forms and modernist ideas reshaped the urban landscape. Her work contributed to a broader cultural shift toward practicality and understated sophistication.

Biarritz also functioned as a cultural hub during this era. Artists such as Igor Stravinsky, Jean Cocteau, and Pablo Picasso frequented the city, drawn by its creative atmosphere. Picasso, during his stay in 1918, produced The Bathers, reflecting the same spirit of renewal that defined Chanel’s work. This intersection of fashion and art reinforced the city’s role in early twentieth century innovation.

The Cruise 2026 2027 show reconnects with this legacy. Visual material released ahead of the presentation emphasizes movement and contrast through black and white imagery. Photographer and director Julien Martinez Leclerc collaborates with model Noor Khan and dancer Kirill Sokołowski to evoke the energy of the Atlantic coast and the freedom embedded in Chanel’s origins.

The show also marks a new chapter under Matthieu Blazy, who presents his first Cruise collection for the House on April 28. The reopening of the Villa de Larralde as a temporary boutique, scheduled to operate until late September, reinforces the link between heritage and current strategy. A partnership with the Biarritz Film Festival further integrates the brand into the city’s cultural calendar, extending its historical ties into contemporary relevance.
