Casablanca Embarks on Ambitious Rehousing Initiative to Eradicate Slums

In a groundbreaking move to address the pressing issue of inadequate housing, the Council of the Casablanca-Settat region has unveiled an ambitious program to relocate and rehouse 62,000 families currently residing in the region's informal settlements. This comprehensive initiative, aligned with the national "Cities Without Slums" program, extends its reach to the prefectures of Casablanca and Mohammedia, as well as the provinces of Nouaceur and Mediouna.

The goal of this endeavor is twofold: to provide dignified social housing solutions and to eradicate substandard living conditions. With an estimated cost of 18.646 billion dirhams, this undertaking will draw upon the collective efforts of various entities, including the Casablanca Urban Agency, the State Property Directorate, and the Casablanca Aménagement et Équipements company.

Recognizing the complexity and far-reaching implications of such a transformative project, a dedicated commission has been established to oversee its execution. Chaired by Mohamed Mhidia, the wali (governor) of the region, this commission comprises representatives from all stakeholders, ensuring a seamless and precise implementation of the program.

Notably, Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, the Minister of National Spatial Planning, Urban Planning, Housing, and City Policy, along with the governors of the affected areas, have been appointed as key members of this commission, underscoring the high-level commitment to this initiative.

The rehousing program represents a concerted effort to uplift the living standards of thousands of families and provide them with access to adequate housing, a fundamental human right.
