Can Rubiales Return as President of the RFEF After His Conviction for the Kiss to Jenni Hermoso?
Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was convicted for sexual assault following the controversial kiss he gave to player Jenni Hermoso. Judge José Manuel Clemente Fernández-Prieto sentenced him to 18 months of daily fines amounting to 10,800 euros but acquitted him of coercion charges related to Hermoso and her entourage.
Although Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault, he will not serve time in prison. He held the presidency of the RFEF from 2018 to 2023, but was forced to resign after the scandal surrounding the kiss during the Women's World Cup final that year, despite having been previously suspended. With the case now concluded, can Rubiales return as president of the RFEF?
The answer is clear: Rubiales cannot return to the position. He is currently banned by FIFA from participating in any football-related activities for three years due to violations of FIFA's Disciplinary Code.
Additionally, the new regulations being considered by the Spanish Sports Council (CSD) propose changes to the electoral processes in sports federations to ensure greater transparency and governance. One of the proposed changes includes a ban for individuals who have been disqualified by disciplinary bodies of national or international sports federations or courts from holding such positions.
Thus, even after his FIFA ban expires, Rubiales will be ineligible to hold the presidency of the Spanish Football Federation due to the new regulations.
