Cambodia’s King undergoes successful cancer surgery in China

Norodom Sihamoni, the King of Cambodia, has undergone a surgical procedure for prostate cancer in China, with officials confirming that the operation was successful.

The 72-year-old monarch was treated at a hospital in Beijing earlier this week. According to former Cambodian leader Hun Sen, the surgery was completed without complications, and the king is now recovering under medical supervision.

The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh confirmed that the king will remain hospitalized for continued observation and treatment. However, no specific timeline has been provided for his full recovery.

King Sihamoni publicly announced his diagnosis earlier this month, noting that doctors had recommended an extended stay in hospital for further treatment lasting one to two months. Despite his illness, officials have reassured the public that his condition is being carefully managed.

Hun Sen, a highly influential political figure and father of the current prime minister Hun Manet, expressed gratitude to the medical team, praising the successful outcome of the operation.

King Sihamoni is widely regarded as a symbolic and respected figure in Cambodian society. He ascended to the throne in 2004 following the abdication of his father, King Norodom Sihanouk. Before becoming monarch, he worked as a classical dance instructor in Paris and later served as Cambodia’s ambassador to UNESCO.

Despite his limited political role, the king remains a unifying figure in Cambodian national identity, admired for his cultural background and diplomatic contributions.
