Brazil seizes 108 kilograms of cocaine bound for Morocco

Brazilian customs authorities intercepted 108 kilograms of cocaine at the port of Santos in the state of São Paulo during a maritime inspection operation conducted on 1 June. The shipment was discovered inside a refrigerated container that was scheduled for export to Morocco, marking another case in which international cargo routes were used to conceal illicit narcotics within legitimate trade flows.

The drugs were found packed in sealed blocks and hidden inside sports bags placed within the container’s cargo load. Once the discovery was confirmed, the case was transferred to federal police authorities responsible for criminal investigation and for identifying those involved in organizing and facilitating the shipment. The container formed part of a larger commercial consignment moving through one of Brazil’s busiest export hubs.

The interception represents the seventh cocaine seizure recorded at the port of Santos since the beginning of 2026. Authorities report that total confiscations at the terminal this year have reached 1,429 kilograms. The port remains a central node for export logistics and a persistent target for trafficking networks that exploit high-volume container traffic to move illegal goods across continents.

While recent seizure totals remain significant, they continue a downward trend compared with previous years. Authorities recorded 7,318 kilograms seized in 2025 across 18 cases, while 2022 saw 16,075 kilograms intercepted. The record year was 2019, with more than 27,000 kilograms confiscated. Officials note that trafficking methods continue to evolve, with criminal groups adapting concealment strategies and diversifying routes to reduce detection risk. The use of refrigerated containers highlights the continued challenge facing enforcement agencies tasked with securing maritime trade corridors.
