Bourita reaffirms Morocco’s call for Sahel nations to resist foreign control

Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita has reiterated his country’s firm stance in support of African sovereignty, urging that nations of the Sahel region should not be subjected to external interference or political guardianship.

Speaking in Moscow alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Bourita emphasized that African states are fully capable of managing their own affairs. “We discussed the Sahel and the Sahara, agreeing that respect for the sovereignty and the choices of these countries is crucial,” he said during a joint press conference.

Bourita recalled Morocco’s consistent backing of stability and development in Sahel countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. “His Majesty has repeatedly underlined the importance of their stability, and Morocco will continue to accompany these nations in anti-terrorism programs aimed at strengthening both security and growth,” he added.

The Moroccan diplomat also highlighted the relevance of the Russia-Africa Forum as a key platform for cooperation. He described the upcoming ministerial meeting as an opportunity to ensure that the forum achieves tangible progress in development and stability, with Russia acting as a long-standing African partner.

Bourita’s remarks came amid rising tensions across the Sahel, where multiple countries have accused foreign powers of meddling in domestic affairs. Mali, in particular, has repeatedly condemned Algeria’s interference, citing acts of hostility and violations of sovereignty.

In 2024, Mali declared the 2015 Algiers Accord, originally intended to promote peace with armed groups, null and void, arguing that Algerian involvement had hindered rather than helped reconciliation. More recently, the country protested Algeria’s decision to shoot down a Malian surveillance drone near their shared border, calling it “a violation of international law and an act of state-sponsored terrorism.”

Alongside Burkina Faso and Niger, Mali has recalled its ambassador from Algiers for consultations, signaling a growing regional resistance to external manipulation.

Through its diplomatic engagement, Morocco continues to position itself as an advocate for African autonomy, promoting stability based on partnership, respect, and non-interference.
