Bourita holds talks with Honduran counterpart in New York

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, held talks Monday in New York with Honduran Foreign Minister Mireya Agüero de Corrales on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two officials to discuss issues of common and regional interest, as well as ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Morocco and Honduras. The talks come as Rabat and Tegucigalpa have been developing closer diplomatic relations and coordinating on several regional and international issues.

The discussions also follow Honduras’s decision in April 2026 to suspend its recognition of the self-proclaimed Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. The decision was formally communicated to Bourita by Agüero de Corrales in an official letter. Honduras said the move reflected its sovereign decision and its commitment to the principles of non-interference and respect for the internal affairs of states.

In the same communication, Honduras reaffirmed its support for efforts led by the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to reach a political, fair and lasting solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, while also referring to relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2797.

The latest meeting in New York places bilateral relations within the wider diplomatic activity surrounding the UN General Assembly, where foreign ministers are holding discussions on regional developments, international cooperation and shared policy priorities.

For Morocco, relations with Central American countries form part of its broader diplomatic engagement beyond its traditional partnerships. Rabat has increasingly sought to strengthen political, economic and institutional ties with Latin American and Caribbean states, while promoting cooperation in areas such as trade, investment and South-South relations.

For Honduras, closer engagement with Morocco comes as Tegucigalpa continues to define its position on regional and international issues while maintaining support for a UN-led political process on the Moroccan Sahara.

The meeting between Bourita and Agüero de Corrales therefore reflects the continuing diplomatic dialogue between Rabat and Tegucigalpa and provides an opportunity to further develop bilateral cooperation alongside discussions on broader regional and international matters.
