Bots now generate more web traffic than humans online
Traffic generated by automated bots now exceeds human activity across large parts of the web. Data from Cloudflare shows bots account for 57.5 percent of HTTP requests targeting HTML content, while human users represent 42.5 percent. The shift marks a structural change in how the internet is accessed and consumed at scale.
Cloudflare, which processes traffic for a large share of global websites, tracks these patterns through its Radar analytics system. The company reports that automated systems now drive the majority of page requests. These bots include search crawlers, data scrapers, and increasingly autonomous artificial intelligence agents capable of browsing websites to complete tasks without direct human input.
The rise has accelerated faster than earlier projections. Company leadership previously estimated that bots would surpass human traffic around 2027. That timeline has now shifted forward as AI-driven agents expand their activity across the web. These systems can navigate multiple websites simultaneously, extract structured information, and replicate tasks that would normally require human browsing at scale.
Industry observers say the trend reflects a broader transformation of internet infrastructure. A growing portion of web traffic no longer originates from individual users but from automated systems designed to collect data, train models, or execute digital workflows. This shift raises pressure on web platforms, advertising systems, and search engines that were originally built around the assumption of human-driven traffic.
Reports from cybersecurity firms indicate that automated traffic is expanding significantly faster than human usage. The rapid adoption of generative AI tools has increased the number of agents capable of interacting with websites independently.
