Boat carrying 90 migrants sinks between Malaysia and Thailand, at least one dead

A boat carrying about 90 migrants capsized near the Malaysia–Thailand border, leaving at least one person dead, Malaysian police confirmed on Sunday. Two other similar vessels have reportedly gone missing in the same area.

The accident occurred three days ago, according to Kedah State Police Chief Adzli Abu Shah, who told local media that the missing boats were carrying roughly the same number of passengers. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with ten survivors rescued so far.

Authorities said the shipwreck took place near Tarutao Island, just north of the tourist destination of Langkawi. “So far, eleven people, including one deceased, have been found,” said Kedah’s Maritime Authority Director, Romli Mustafa, warning that more victims may still be at sea.

Malaysia hosts millions of migrant workers from poorer Asian countries, many of whom are undocumented and employed in sectors such as construction and agriculture. Human trafficking networks frequently organize these dangerous crossings, which often end in tragedy.

In one of Malaysia’s deadliest incidents, more than twenty migrants drowned in multiple capsizings in December 2021.
