Black Sea NATO members strengthen mine operations to safeguard critical infrastructure
Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey have agreed to broaden the mission of their joint Black Sea mine-clearing force, adding new responsibilities aimed at protecting vital maritime infrastructure.
The decision, announced during the NATO summit, reflects growing security concerns in the Black Sea region, where naval activity and wartime risks have increased significantly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
From mine removal to infrastructure protection
The three NATO members established the multinational mine countermeasure task force in 2024 to address the danger posed by drifting naval mines in the Black Sea.
Under the expanded mandate, the force will continue clearing maritime hazards while also supporting efforts to secure strategic infrastructure, including facilities and routes essential to regional trade and energy security.
The initiative represents a deeper level of cooperation between the three allies, which share the Black Sea with Russia, Ukraine and Georgia.
Security concerns continue in strategic waterway
The Black Sea has become a key area of military and economic importance since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine. Floating mines have created additional risks for commercial shipping and naval operations, prompting neighbouring countries to strengthen surveillance and response capabilities.
By expanding the role of the mine-clearing group, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey aim to improve coordination and ensure faster responses to potential maritime threats.
NATO allies reinforce regional resilience
The agreement highlights NATO’s broader focus on strengthening security cooperation among member states located near areas affected by ongoing conflicts.
For the Black Sea allies, protecting maritime infrastructure has become a priority as energy networks, shipping routes and communication systems face increasing strategic pressure.
The expanded task force is expected to serve as a practical tool for regional defence cooperation while maintaining the safety of maritime activities in one of Europe’s most sensitive security zones.
