Béni Mellal-Khénifra’s Water Crisis: Adil Barakat on "Walaw"

Béni Mellal-Khénifra’s Water Crisis: Adil Barakat on "Walaw"

At the second edition of the National Forum on Advanced Regionalization, Adil Barakat, President of the Béni Mellal-Khénifra Regional Council, addressed crucial issues facing his region, including the water shortage and climate challenges. In an exclusive statement to Walaw, he praised the organization of the event and highlighted the importance of the royal letter sent to participants, which he described as a comprehensive message, structuring and providing clear directives.

Barakat emphasized that advanced regionalization is a structural project for Morocco, with King Mohammed VI urging the acceleration of its implementation. A key priority in this regard is the adoption of the administrative decentralization charter, which aims to enhance local governance and regional development.

Water Scarcity: A Major Challenge for Béni Mellal-Khénifra

The Béni Mellal-Khénifra region is particularly affected by water stress, a phenomenon exacerbated by climate change. The sharp decline in water resources, the reduction of dam reserves, and the depletion of groundwater are severely impacting agriculture, which remains the region's primary economic sector.

During a workshop dedicated to the water crisis, Barakat discussed the challenges and potential solutions. Among the proposed measures are the construction of new dams, the transfer of water between surplus and deficit basins, and the development of desalination plants. While these projects have faced delays, significant budgets have recently been allocated for their realization.

"We are facing a difficult period for the next year or two, but the efforts underway will soon ensure sustainable water management and water security for the future," said Adil Barakat.

Morocco's Capacity to Host Major Events and Drive Development

When asked about Morocco’s ability to overcome organizational challenges associated with major events, such as the 2030 World Cup, Barakat expressed optimism. He emphasized the remarkable progress achieved under King Mohammed VI, particularly in infrastructure, mobility, and large-scale projects.

"The World Cup will be an opportunity to showcase Morocco’s potential—a country that has transformed itself and positioned itself as a leader on the African continent," he stated, also referencing ongoing projects, such as the expansion of the railway network to Marrakech and Agadir, as well as the construction of modern stadiums.

Finally, Adil Barakat commended the royal vision and the collective efforts aimed at ensuring sustainable regional development and positioning Morocco among the advanced nations. According to him, the Kingdom is on an upward trajectory, and its future achievements will confirm this positive momentum.

This comprehensive approach to addressing regional issues, particularly the water crisis, reflects the country's commitment to development and sustainability. The success of these efforts will not only resolve the current challenges but also contribute to Morocco’s long-term resilience and growth.
