Banksy claims new London statue critiquing blind patriotism

Street artist Banksy has taken responsibility for a large sculpture that appeared before dawn on a traffic island in central London's Waterloo Place. The work depicts a man in a suit leaping from a pedestal with his face completely obscured by a billowing flag. Discovered on Wednesday, the piece quickly drew crowds and sparked widespread interpretation as a sharp critique of blind nationalism.

Workers installed the sculpture in the early hours of Wednesday near Buckingham Palace, surrounded by monuments honoring King Edward VII, Florence Nightingale, and the Crimean War memorial. Banksy's name appeared engraved on the pedestal base, fueling immediate speculation about its origins. On Thursday, the artist confirmed authorship through an Instagram video showing nighttime installation footage, consistent with his long-standing practice of authenticating street works via social media rather than public appearances.

James Peak, host of the BBC podcast The Banksy Story, described the piece as a brilliant commentary on a power figure so consumed by nationalism that he risks stepping into the void. An on-site student told reporters the work responds to the resurgence of nationalism globally and in Britain, noting the suit evokes a politician. A gallery owner estimated its value at up to £500,000, while online commentators and art observers have dubbed it "Blind Faith."

Westminster City Council has secured the statue with safety barriers but plans to leave it on display for now. Officials expressed delight at hosting a Banksy piece in the borough. Though Banksy remains best known for spray-painted murals on buildings since the early 1990s in Bristol, his street creations have fetched millions at auctions despite frequent theft and vandalism.
