Bangladesh: Prosecutor demands death penalty for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina

The prosecution on Thursday demanded the death penalty for former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 78, who is being tried in absentia by a court in Dhaka. She is accused of ordering the repression of riots that led to her ousting in 2024.

“We demand the maximum penalty. For a single murder, the death penalty is the rule. For 1,400 murders, she deserves it 1,400 times,” declared prosecutor Tajul Islam. “She is a hardened criminal and has shown no remorse for her brutality,” he added in court.

Nicknamed the “Iron Begum,” Hasina ruled the country unchallenged for 15 years (2009–2024) and was forced from power in August 2024 following violent anti-government riots sparked by a student uprising. According to the UN, at least 1,400 people were killed, most by security forces. Hasina currently lives in exile in India.

In June, her party, the Awami League, denounced the trial as a “show trial” and categorically denied all charges. Alongside Hasina, the court is trying her former interior minister and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. Bangladeshi authorities have issued several arrest warrants for Hasina, which India has so far refused to enforce.
