Auchan to sell 91 supermarkets to Intermarché amid financial struggles
French retail giant Auchan is planning to sell 91 of its supermarkets to Intermarché as part of a broader partnership aimed at rebranding its stores. The move comes as Auchan faces financial difficulties and seeks to restructure its operations.
The agreement, initially signed in November, involved transferring 266 Auchan supermarkets to the independent retailer group, Groupement Mousquetaires, headed by Thierry Cotillard. Following an internal review, Auchan decided that 164 stores would be operated under the Intermarché brand through a franchise agreement, while the company would retain ownership of the buildings and employ the staff. The full integration of these stores under Intermarché or Netto is expected by April 2027.
The 91 remaining stores, due to their economic or geographic characteristics, are proposed for direct sale to Intermarché members. If rejected, Auchan plans to place them on the open market. The last 11 larger stores will continue to operate under the Auchan brand in other formats.
This restructuring project requires consultation with employee representatives and approval from competition authorities, marking a crucial step in Auchan’s effort to stabilize its operations amidst challenging market conditions.
