At least seven dead in armed attack on Mexican bar

At least seven people were killed and five others seriously injured in an armed assault on a bar in the city of Tula, located in the central Mexican state of Hidalgo, authorities reported on Saturday. Four victims died at the scene, while three others succumbed to their injuries in hospitals.

Witnesses told authorities that gunmen stormed La Resaka, a popular local bar, around 1:30 a.m. local time (07:30 GMT). As of now, law enforcement has not apprehended the suspected perpetrators.

While such attacks are uncommon in Hidalgo, state security officials acknowledged that rival gang conflicts have been observed in Tula, particularly involving stolen fuel trafficking. Tensions escalated after the capture of a local gang leader in March, resulting in at least ten deaths in the following months.

Since the launch of Mexico’s anti-drug military operations in December 2006, the country has experienced widespread violence, with more than 450,000 deaths and over 100,000 disappearances, according to official figures.
